SHORT BRIEF OF HEAD OF STATE INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Head of State Invitational Golf Tournament is a high‑profile amateur golf event held in Ghana under the patronage of the President. It is designed not only as a sporting competition but also as a gathering of business executives, government officials, and other leaders, with the aim of promoting national development through sport and networking.

Key Features

  • Purpose & Theme
    The event is intended to honour the sitting Head of State while using golf as a platform to bring together the executive arm of government and leaders of private/corporate Ghana. It aims to generate ideas, foster collaboration, and encourage business opportunities—some editions even set out to spur investment deals.

  • Participants
    Mostly executive and corporate golfers from across Ghana, including prominent figures in business, government, traditional leadership, etc. Some editions draw in golfers from other West African countries.

  • Format
    Categories: They have multiple categories (Men’s Group A, Men’s Group B, Ladies, etc.).

Handicap scoring is used (gross & net) to determine winners in the groups.

 Auxiliary prizes are also given — e.g. “longest drive,” “closest to pin,” etc. 

  • Venues
    The tournament has been held in several prominent golf courses, including Royal Golf Club in Kumasi, Achimota Golf Club in Accra, among others. Venues sometimes change due to logistical reasons.

Organized by the Northwestern Solutions and Ghana Golf Association and collaborations with private sector partners. Supported by numerous corporate sponsors

Notable Moments

  • The maiden edition of the tournament coincided with Ghana’s Diamond Jubilee Independence Anniversary (Ghana@60) celebrations.

  • In 2018, the tournament got a “royal touch” when Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Okyenhene Amoatia Ofori Panin II competed together in the tee‑off at Kumasi, drawing considerable attention.

  • The 2021 edition (third in the series) was held at Achimota Golf Club under the theme “Transforming the Nation Through Golf,” emphasizing the tournament’s developmental aspirations.

  • Benjamin Dablaa won the Men’s Group A category in 2021, with strong performances across both gross and net scores.
